This is not the first time I’ve taken the NBA to task over a free agency system that discourages competitive balance, the most important element of any league. I feel fortunate I worked for 28 years in the NFL, a league that understands how critical it is for all teams to believe they have a chance to win a Super Bowl or conference title as a result of astute drafting, quality free-agent signings, smart trades and great coaching/playing....

Environmental advocates say the bottles waste resources—most are made from a derivative of crude oil and are transported for miles in diesel-guzzling trucks. The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the first-ever case of the virus was reported, has ramped up its testing in a bid to prevent a second wave of infections. On Saturday alone, 1,146,156 tests were conducted in Wuhan, which is home to around 11 million people. Between May 14 and 23, the city conducted 6,574,093 tests for the virus, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission reports. The number of tests done on Saturday in the city was more than 15 times the number reported on May 14, when a citywide campaign to test all those yet untested was launched....

The Asian Football Confederation said last week that Jeonbuk from the continent’s premier club competition over their involvement in a 2013 bribery scandal. Jeonbuk were docked nine points and fined $91,000 by the K League’s disciplinary committee in September for payments a club scout made to referees in 2013. “Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors seeks an order staying the execution of the challenged decision in order to be able to participate in the competition,” CAS said in a statement, adding that it intends to issue a decision by Feb....

In a few days, the Indian football team will play Thailand in their opening match of the AFC Asian Cup on January 6 in Abu Dhabi. However, while Thailand and the other teams in the competition stepped up their preparations by playing friendlies in the last couple of days, India conducted an intra-team match on December 30, which means they basically held a training session. For India, this is an important tournament as it will indicate the amount of progress they have made in the continent since 2011 - the last time they qualified for the final stages of the Asian Cup....

Jakarta, Aug 20 (PTI) Vinesh Phogat today created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, brushing aside her rivals with remarkable ease in the 50kg category here. Vinesh was a medal-favourite in her category and was likely to face stiff competition from Japan’s Yuki Irie whom she outplayed 6-2 in the final. This is a ground-breaking achievement for the 23-year-old firebrand Haryana wrestler, who is connected to Dangal-famed Phogat family....
